The Full Time Master’s Degree Program which is the flagship of the UMCSAWM is of 12-calandar month duration covering 60 credits. This program is for both local and international engineering professionals who wish to obtain a Master’s Degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management. Aim of the course is to provide a specialist knowledge enhancement and capacity building with a firm grounding in the principles, techniques, issues, and practice of sustainable water engineering to practicing engineers. Among the subjects covered in the program are watershed and water resources management, water pollution, treatment and waste disposal, GIS, remote sensing, river & estuary hydraulics, hydrologic modelling, environmental assessments, disaster, and coastal zone management.

In terms of the credits covered by the program this degree is equivalent to a two-year master’s degree usually taught elsewhere in the world. During the year, which is common to both fulltime degree, and part-time postgraduate diploma options, the students follow a schedule of intensive lectures, workshops, seminars and field work on Fridays and Saturdays of each week irrespective of state holidays. On special occasions, especially when lecturers are available from overseas, the special programs may be conducted on other days as well.

Regular lectures are conducted on Fridays and Saturdays of each week irrespective of state holidays. On other days of the week, scholars are required to follow special lectures on research along with their own research work to fulfill the requirements for the Master’s Degree.

All taught courses are offered during the first 12-month period, which consists of three terms with written examinations conducted at the end of the term. During the term period, relevant design course works, assignment and continuous assessment reports should be submitted. Prior to the end of each term viva voce for problem-based learning projects and others will be held. This one-year (full-time) Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. is well supported by the South Asia Foundation (SAF). SAF offers 8 Madanjeet Singh scholarships for each intake and selections are based on country quota and gender equality.
