Dr. Benno Böer, a distinguished UNESCO Natural Science Specialist in New Delhi, visited the UMCSAWM at the University of Moratuwa on September 26th, 2023, to discuss potential areas of collaboration. He was accompanied by Ms. Himali Jinadasa, Country Coordinator, Sri Lanka, UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in New Delhi covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka and Ms. Nebiha Böer, UNICEF Programme Officer.

Dr. Böer has over 30 years of international experience in the global environmental sciences, with a focus on socio-ecological issues, climate change, and ecosystem conservation. Presently, he is serving as a Programme Specialist and the Chief of the Section of Natural Science in New Delhi, with a geographical focus on Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. UMCSAWM is a leading centre for research and education in Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering, and Dr Böer’s expertise in these areas could be invaluable in helping the centre achieve its goals.

Research students at UMCSAWM presented their studies to Dr. Benno Böer, who provided valuable feedback that will assist them in their future endeavours.

Dr. Böer’s visit was also a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges. Climate change, ecosystem conservation, and water security are all issues that require a global response. By working together, we can find solutions that will benefit all of humanity.
