Irrigation Workshop Days 3 & 4: Strengthening Skills in Modeling and Water Management

The final two days of the 4-Day Training Workshop on Irrigation Engineering, Hydraulics, and Hydrological Modeling, organized by UMCSAWM in collaboration with the Southern Provincial Irrigation Department, were focused on advanced training in hydrological modeling and reservoir management.

Irrigation Workshop Day 3: Building Skills in Rainfall–Runoff Modeling

Day 3 introduced participants to rainfall–runoff processes, emphasizing the catchment water balance and the hydrological mechanisms that drive runoff generation. A session on data preprocessing followed, equipping participants with techniques for filling data gaps and ensuring data consistency. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to hands-on training with the HEC-HMS modeling software, where participants practiced catchment delineation and rainfall–runoff simulations, gaining confidence in applying the tool for practical water resources planning.

Irrigation Workshop Day 4: Reservoir Routing and Flood Risk Assessment

Day 4 built on this foundation, moving into reservoir routing and flood risk assessment. Participants engaged in advanced HEC-HMS exercises before transitioning to HEC-RAS, where they explored river hydraulics, reservoir operations, and flood forecasting applications. These practical sessions highlighted the importance of integrated modeling approaches in disaster preparedness, irrigation planning, and sustainable water resources management.

The workshop concluded with a closing session and the awarding of certificates. Over four days, the program successfully combined lectures, laboratory demonstrations, fieldwork, and software-based applications to provide participants with both theoretical understanding and practical skills. The knowledge gained is expected to contribute meaningfully to more efficient and sustainable irrigation and water management practices across the region.
