From Theory to Terrain: Exploring Real-World Water Challenges – A Successful Field Visit by the 8th Batch of the UMCSAWM MSc Program
The 2-day field visit for the 8th batch of the Water Resources Engineering and Management (WREM) and Water Resources Management (WRM) MSc programs was successfully conducted on the 29th and 30th of March 2025. The visit saw the active participation of students (majority are actually working water professionals) and staff from the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Centre for South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM) at University of Moratuwa.
The field trip included insightful visits to the Victoria Dam and Power Plant, Lunugamwehera Dam, and several other significant water resource landmarks. Students are currently following CE5871 – Climate Change and Adaptation Options for Water Management and CE5872 – Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in Semester III, both of which incorporate embedded Problem-based Learning/Design Thinking (PBL/PBDT) components. The field visit is expected to enhance their learning by integrating real-world practices with ancient water wisdom and modern technological approaches.
Special appreciation is extended to the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka (MASL), the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), and the Irrigation Department (ID) for their invaluable support and guidance in organizing this visit. We also sincerely thank the engineers and officials at the visited sites for their time and for conducting informative briefings for the students.
