ICHARM Research Specialists Visit UMCSAWM

Dr. Mohamed Rasmy (Senior Researcher), Dr. Katsunori Tamakawa (Research Specialist), and Dr. Badri Shrestha (Research Specialist) from the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), Japan, visited the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Centre for South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM), University of Moratuwa, on February 14, 2025.

The collaboration with ICHARM has been deeply rooted since UMCSAWM’s inception, with significant contributions toward advancing water resilience research in Sri Lanka and the broader South Asian region. ICHARM has been at the forefront of global flood modeling, climate risk assessments, and integrated water disaster management. Their groundbreaking initiatives include the development of the Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model, global flood risk projections, and policy-driven climate adaptation strategies. This ongoing partnership will not only enhance UoM’s research capacity but also greatly benefit our undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional training programs across South Asia.

On this visit, our staff had a fruitful discussion with the ICHARM team on the latest advancements and challenges in water resources engineering. The UMCSAWM is excited about the prospect of further collaborating with ICHARM on new research initiatives and the organization of specialized training sessions aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of undergraduate and postgraduate students. This partnership promises to contribute significantly to the growth of water resources management in the region.
