Memorandum of Understanding

The University of Moratuwa and the South Asia Foundation (SAF) established the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Centre of South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM) at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The UMCSAWM project was commissioned in October 2010 through the MoU between the South Asia Foundation and the University of Moratuwa. The project aimed to be a regional center of excellence in sustainable water resources management, and work commenced to develop the postgraduate degree program, computer facilities for mathematical modeling, and experimental facilities.

In June 2012, the University Grants Commission approved the Postgraduate Degree program in water resources management. The Madanjeet Singh Building was inaugurated in 2013, and the first intake of 19 students began their studies in August of that year.
A fresh MoU has been signed between SAF Sri Lanka and the University of Moratuwa, extending the project life until 2024.

At UMCSAWM, we strongly believe in the power of partnerships. Our collaboration with SAF trustees as donors has been a game-changer for our Sustainable Water Resources Management Project. With their unwavering support, we’ve been able to address any challenges and make necessary improvements through their valuable feedback and periodic evaluations. Recently, SAF’s governing council meeting was held in Colombo, and we were honored to host their visit to UMCSAWM. Their positive remarks regarding the achievements of our graduates have been an incredible morale booster for our team. We’re grateful for their confidence and look forward to continued success through our partnerships.
